Soft baby trainers are a wonderful present for newborn babies. Whilst there are many different branded shoes for babies on the market at the moment, many are only suitable for older babies, not newborns.

A newborn baby's feet really can't cope with any hard fabrics so only the soft leather or canvas ones are appropriate.

There are many designs that look like actual trainers made from lovely soft fabric that would be perfect for babies.

Obviously because babies have delicate, pliable feet most trainers have elasticated heels which enables you to pull the shoes on and off with ease. You won't find these types of shoes with laces, or if there are laces they will be for aethetic purposes and won't be used to put the baby shoes on with.

You will find most of them start at size 0 but as these shoes can be worn until your baby is walking, they will go up to size 18 months - 2 years. Most children will make the transition from soft baby shoes to proper shoes or trainers once they've started walking.

Once upon a time it was quite difficult to buy shoes for newborn babies. Most people knitted booties instead which were probably much warmer and cosier that the shoes one can buy nowadays!

However, you were very much confined to one style whereas with modern styles, colours and designs are endless and can be mixed and matched depending on the clothes you're dressing your baby in.

Should you buy trainers or shoes for your baby?

Does it matter what you buy?

Well, the answer is actually yes and no. Remember that your baby's bones are soft and require space to grow. If you choose a shoe that is very tight this will impede growth and developement be it a trainer or a shoe. Up until a baby is walking, it is recommended that you buy the soft shoe that have a bit of elastic around it, to help fit onto your baby's feet.

You can buy them in all styles and there are some fabulous trainer 'lookalikes' so it really doesn't matter if you choose a shoe or a trainer.

Once your child is walking, it's very important to get shoes fitted professionally. It is very possible to find baby trainers that do provide the space required to aid development but this will be dependent on the fitting. What fits one child well, may not fit another. This is the same for any type of shoe, not just 'proper shoes' but trainers too.

If you buy trainers for your toddler, make sure you don't have them on their feet for long periods of time to begin with.
